The Necessary Mentoring Skills for An Adept Mentor
When it comes to mentoring, there are always two parties involved: the
mentor and the mentee. To be a stellar mentor is not easy as it needs
not only the appropriate qualifications but also the right attitude and
mentality as well as loads of patience and a strong desire to help
others succeed.
Mentoring Opportunity
Mentoring skills can be developed but if there is no passion to
help others to excel and succeed, it will be a very frustrating journey
and an experience that can be bitter and lacking in fulfillment.
The individual who desires to be a mentor must aim to be the
best mentor, not just a mediocre one. There are many opportunities
everywhere for mentors to get into action. Those desiring to be mentors
must want to benefit others with their skills, knowledge, experience
and time.
Target Groups
Mentors are always required to support and lead the younger
generation of entrepreneurs who want to kick start their own businesses
or develop their career paths. Mentors may also be called into
organizations of various sizes to coach their employees at all levels
in developing a spirit of camaraderie in the company to ensure higher
productivity.
Mentors with specific skills and knowledge as well as sufficient industrial experience can be called in to support commercial environments and enable them to overcome specific gaps such as a particular skill in a certain area.
Mentors are usually experts in some specific area such as finance, IT,
legal, marketing, export/import, production, human resources or PR.
Mentor’s Role
A mentor may be required in one-on-one face-to-face sessions or in a
small group environment. A one-on-one session is usually for open
discussion and expression of personal issues which may be hindering the
character development of the individual and which in turn block the
rise and ability to shine in the social, work or academic environment.
A mentor can also be working with a small group where open group
discussion is strongly encouraged to allow group unity to develop. The
mentor uses effective mentoring skills and techniques to steer and
control the discussion towards the desired objective and results.
Hence, a good mentor can use his experience, skills and knowledge to
manage the small group discussion wisely and effectively.
Commitments
A mentor will share his mentoring skills at relevant workshops
and seminars and with those who engage his services and mentoring
expertise. There may be monthly networking sessions to guide others who
are interested in acquiring good mentoring skills or require the right
platform to exercise learned mentoring skills and techniques.
There are possible training workshops for individuals or companies to keep the mentees updated on new Mentoring skills,
scenarios, tools and approaches. Veteran mentors will also function as
advisors to younger mentors who might experience some degree of
difficulty in the field.
